Mia’s music can be easily referred to as pretty or “a little angsty”, or simple and sweet, or “a little early Cat Power or Liz Phair” …but there is a rudimentary nature embedded in these songs that, for me, transcends any given era and makes them feel all the more legitimate. It’s the contrast of harmony with the grittiness of “lo-fi” that strikes a chord and drew me in. All the more compelling to me was the fact that she was truly a “bedroom” musician. Mia was not sending e-mails to labels trying to get someone to put a record out for her; she wasn’t even playing shows or sharing her music publicly. She had given some recordings to a childhood friend of her sister, and they were moved by them as such that they and their husband released the cassette on their label, Related Records. Releasing records for artists and groups is interesting because the judgement to do so can be clouded by many external factors (many of which are completely understandable and usually somehow relate to finances). …of course: it’s not feasible to press records of every single small thing that you come across and enjoy, but every now and then, Gilgongo has allowed me to try and share truly obscure material, even on the macro level of “sub-culture” or “independent music”, releases that mattered to me enough to go through the motions of making them physical and available to the outside world as best as I can. I eventually learned that I wasn't a guitarist and sought more minimal, simple ways of making sounds. But that's really where things started, so I've always felt a connection to that type of music, even in these days of electronic music. I also think there's an idea about electronic music being a bit evasive or emotionally inaccessible at times, or lacking personal transparency. I wanted to challenge expectations of an ambient record by framing it how I would have 10 years ago. There’s no sense that Passageways is projecting itself outward toward the ears of prospective listeners. In fact, the chords of “Blue Leaves” are definitely spiralling inward, like a cyclone that one could cradle within two hands, the crackling chords twisting upward only to pirouette downward again. Similarly, there’s a rumbling at the bottom of “Ageless Imagination” (forever reminding me of a train passing underfoot) that acts like a gravity anchor, trapping the murmured melodies within a kind of convection current that skirts the ceiling, plummets softly, then scoops upward all over again. All of these tracks form their own introspective cocoons. Yet this isn’t an act of defence against the outside; rather, these pieces feel so enrapt in their own sentiment that no energy is spared to contemplate expressing it to someone else. Your environs is a purchased ecosystem. Motel rooms blend together. Even in new cities, you’ve inhabited that room. When you exist in these intermediary, interchangeable spaces, it can be disorienting and psychedelic, especially after long days of driving and playing shows - at the precipice, things slip, reality shifts, the unseen is more easily felt. I was curious to try my hand at soundtracks, so I offered my help.
