Willow Skye-Biggs has spent the last decade exploring the intersections of identity and ritual through her ambient, experimental and techno projects. Most notably, she created soaring, beat-oriented experimental-pop under the name Stag Hare and bedroom techhouse under the moniker ariel.
For this latest project, Willow has taken on Sabriel's Orb to dress her pulsing longform ambient pieces with an audible glow that shines like a naked bulb under several thick blankets. Warm washes of synths float over these faintly surging arpeggios. It's worth losing an afternoon in.
For the fourth in WSR's split cassette series, Sabriel's Orb is paired with Sydney Australia based artist John Atkinson. Formerly of the Brooklyn hypnogogic pop group Aa, John's recent work has lent itself to creating uneasy atmospheres scoring documentaries about hitmen and arthouse comedies. John's latest on WSR is a meditative suite matching synthscapes and field recordings to create soothing tonal structures somewhere between Steve Hauschildt and Hiroshi Yoshimura.
"The artist formerly known as Stag Hare, Skye-Biggs cloaks herself in the mystery of Sabriel’s Orb, the winking night stretching toward infinite horizons. “Holding” generously pulses and blinks like a beacon guiding you to another world. Burst through and emerge in glittering starlight forever." - Tiny Mix Tapes
"Sabriel’s Orb: Opening with an wide-eyed modular harmony Sky-Biggs’ sound is in full control with a late 70’s/early 80’s sci-fi synth soundtrack sensibility. It’s sweet, slightly dark, and emits pulsations that set the scene. " - Toneshift
